Stepping Into Something New

A new year brings the promise of new experiences, fresh opportunities and exciting discoveries. While many adults use January to set resolutions and goals for the year ahead, for young children, this time of year offers something just as valuable: the chance to explore, try something new and discover what they are capable of.

In the early years, learning is a journey of small steps. From tasting an unfamiliar food to joining a new game or learning to do something independently, every new experience gives children an opportunity to develop their confidence, curiosity and understanding of the world around them.

At Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, supported and encouraged to explore at their own pace. This January, as part of our Seasons of Wonder campaign, we’ll be celebrating the little steps that help children grow, building confidence through curiosity and discovering that learning is all about having a go.

The Confidence to Try Something New

Trying something unfamiliar can feel daunting for anyone, especially a young child who is still discovering their abilities and making sense of the world around them.

In the early years, new experiences provide valuable opportunities for children to develop independence, problem-solving skills and resilience. When children are encouraged to have a go, make choices and explore different possibilities, they begin to develop confidence in their own abilities.

These experiences don’t need to be big milestones. They might involve exploring a new texture, listening to an unfamiliar story, joining in with a group activity or practising a physical skill for the first time.

Sometimes, children will embrace something straight away. Other times, they may prefer to watch, observe and try again when they feel ready. Both are important parts of learning. By offering encouragement without pressure, practitioners can help children feel secure enough to take small steps beyond what is familiar to them.

And when something doesn’t go to plan? That’s learning, too.

Through supportive relationships and opportunities to practise, children begin to understand that they don’t have to get everything right first time. They can try again, find another way or ask for help. These early experiences help lay the foundations for resilience and a positive attitude towards future learning.

Celebrating Every New Discovery

This January, our nurseries will be embracing a Stepping Into Something New challenge, inviting children to explore new experiences and celebrate each step along the way.

Children will have opportunities to try activities such as:

  • Exploring new textures and materials: Discovering different sensations through sensory play, helping children develop curiosity and confidence in exploring their surroundings.
  • Learning a new song or word: Building communication and language skills through songs, conversation, repetition and playful interactions.
  • Trying a new fruit or food: Exploring different tastes, colours and textures at their own pace, helping children become familiar with a wider variety of foods.
  • Joining a different group activity: Developing social confidence, practising turn-taking and building relationships with other children.
  • Practising a new physical skill: Exploring movement, balance and coordination as children discover what their bodies can do.
  • Choosing an unfamiliar book: Exploring new stories, characters and ideas while developing listening skills, imagination and a love of reading.

Each time a child takes a step into something new, they’ll have the opportunity to add a footprint to a shared nursery display. As the footprints grow, children can see the different experiences they’ve explored together and celebrate their achievements as a group.

The aim isn’t to see who can try the most things or encourage children to do something before they’re ready. Instead, it’s about recognising individual progress, celebrating effort and helping every child feel proud of their own discoveries.

Learning at Every Child’s Own Pace

Every child develops differently, with their own interests, preferences and approaches to new experiences. Some children are naturally eager to explore, while others need more time, reassurance or opportunities to observe before joining in.

Understanding these individual differences is an important part of early years practice. By getting to know each child, practitioners can offer experiences that build on their interests, gently introduce new challenges and provide the right level of support to help them progress.

A carefully chosen activity, an encouraging word or the opportunity to try again can make a meaningful difference. Just as importantly, giving children time to explore independently allows them to make choices, follow their curiosity and develop a growing sense of autonomy.

At Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries, we create safe, nurturing and engaging environments where children are encouraged to explore, experiment and discover at a pace that feels right for them. Through play-based learning and supportive relationships, we help children develop the confidence to ask questions, embrace new experiences and take pride in what they can achieve.

Bringing New Adventures Home

Families can support this journey of discovery at home, too. There is no need to set formal resolutions or introduce big challenges. Often, the most valuable opportunities come from everyday moments.

You could invite your child to choose a new story at bedtime, explore a different park, help prepare a new recipe, learn a song together or practise a skill they’ve been working towards. Giving children simple choices and allowing them time to explore can help nurture independence and confidence.

It’s also worth celebrating the effort rather than just the outcome. Recognising that your child kept trying, asked for help or was brave enough to have a go can help them understand that learning is about the process, not simply getting things right.

You might even create a family adventure list together, filled with little things you’d like to discover, explore or experience over the coming year.

A New Year Full of Possibilities

As we step into a new year, our focus at Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries is on the possibilities that come from giving children the time, space and encouragement to grow.

Every new word, every attempt at a different activity and every moment of growing independence is part of a much bigger journey. By celebrating these small but meaningful steps, we can help children develop the confidence to explore their world, the resilience to keep trying and the curiosity to discover what comes next.

Because growing up isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about feeling confident enough to take that next little step.
