Nutrition at Monkey Puzzle

At Monkey Puzzle, we believe that healthy eating in childhood lays the foundation for a lifetime of good habits. Our approach to early childhood nutrition ensures every child enjoys balanced, freshly prepared meals that meet their childhood nutritional needs. Each dish is designed to support growth, learning, and wellbeing, with mealtimes that are a happy, sociable part of their day.

Expert-Led Nursery Menus

Our menus are created in partnership with Laura Matthews, a specialist in early years nutrition. Each menu offers a perfect balance of familiar favourites and exciting new tastes, encouraging children to explore different flavours and textures.

Every menu is designed to:

  • Meet EYFS nutrition standards and DfE Early Years Nutrition Guidance
  • Provide nutritionally balanced meals tailored to toddlers and preschool children
  • Support healthy growth, development and wellbeing
  • Introduce children to diverse, wholesome foods that broaden their childhood diet
  • Accommodate all dietary requirements, including allergies and cultural preferences

Mealtime Experience

We believe every mealtime should be full of smiles and discovery. From first tastes to favourite dishes, our approach to promoting healthy eating in early years helps children learn to enjoy balanced meals in a sociable setting.

Breakfast

Breakfast

Breakfast time gives children a wholesome and nutritious start to their day, with low-sugar cereals such as Weetabix, Ready Brek, or porridge oats. We encourage children to take an active role in their mealtime by supporting them to self-serve where possible. This helps them build independence, make healthy choices, and develop important fine-motor skills. Staff are always close by to guide and assist, creating a calm, positive routine that helps children feel confident and ready for the day ahead.

Lunch

Lunch

Lunchtime provides a balanced mix of energy, protein, and vegetables to keep children sustained and support healthy development. We use a variety of flavours and textures to encourage children to try new foods and build confidence, helping them develop positive, adventurous eating habits. Mealtimes are relaxed and sociable, giving children the chance to enjoy their food and learn from one another.

Tea

Tea

A healthy tea helps children refuel after a busy day, with light meals made from fresh, wholesome ingredients that keep them satisfied until they get home. Nutritious puddings made with fruit, yoghurt, or oats add natural sweetness and extra nutrients, helping children enjoy a balanced, enjoyable diet. This relaxed mealtime also gives children a chance to socialise, try new foods, and develop positive eating habits.

Snacks

Snacks

We have dedicated snack times throughout the day, offering a variety of healthy options such as fruit, vegetables, dips, crackers, and oatcakes. These snacks give children energy to explore, play, and enjoy different flavours and textures while encouraging them to try new foods. Snack times also provide a relaxed opportunity for children to develop independence as they serve themselves and make choices about what they eat.

Learning About Food

We love helping children discover where their food comes from while encouraging a positive relationship with what they eat. Through fun, hands-on experiences and personalised support, children are gently encouraged to explore new flavours, textures, and ingredients. With balanced nutrition in every bite and trusted expertise behind each meal, mealtimes become a positive, joyful experience that supports childhood nutrition.

Food & Nutrition FAQ’s

Here are some of the questions we’re often asked by parents.

What qualifications do your kitchen staff and chef hold?2025-12-10T10:04:39+00:00

Our dedicated nursery chef holds relevant professional catering qualifications and is trained to the highest level of Food Hygiene and Safety. Our entire team receives regular training, ensuring they are aware of safe food handling, storage practices, and our strict allergy policies.

Do the children participate in any food-related learning activities?2025-12-10T10:01:39+00:00

Yes, we believe food education is vital! We regularly incorporate food into our learning, including sensory play with different vegetables, reading books about farming, and involving the children in small-scale cooking or gardening activities, like growing herbs or tomatoes.

Do you encourage children to try to “self-serve” their food?2025-12-10T10:00:17+00:00

For our toddlers and preschoolers, we actively encourage self-service with appropriate guidance. This promotes independence, helps children understand appropriate portion control, and allows them to take ownership of their food choices, which often encourages them to try a wider variety of items.

How are mealtimes structured in the nursery?2025-12-10T09:59:46+00:00

Mealtimes are a social and educational highlight of the day. They are structured consistently, allowing children to sit together, practice table manners, and engage in conversation. We use this time to teach children about where food comes from and how different foods help their bodies grow, linking nutrition to the curriculum.

How does the nursery handle ‘picky eaters’?2025-12-10T09:59:17+00:00

We approach fussy or picky eaters with patience, positive encouragement, and a ‘no pressure’ environment. We offer a small portion of everything, encourage children to simply touch or smell new items, and pair them with foods they already love. Our staff model positive eating behaviour, making mealtimes social and relaxed rather than a battle.

What drinks are provided to keep my child hydrated throughout the day?2025-12-10T09:58:45+00:00

We prioritise hydration by offering fresh drinking water at all times, accessible to the children throughout the rooms and outdoor areas. We also incorporate regular ‘drinks breaks’ into our daily routine.

Can I provide my own breast milk or formula for my baby?2025-12-10T09:58:05+00:00

Yes. We are fully supportive of both breastfeeding and formula feeding. You are welcome to provide pre-measured formula or labelled expressed breast milk, which our staff will store safely and prepare according to your instructions and your baby’s feeding schedule.

How do you support the weaning process for babies?2025-12-10T09:57:16+00:00

We work closely with parents to support your baby’s individual weaning journey, whether you choose traditional purees or baby-led weaning. We transition babies gradually onto solids, starting with single-ingredient purees and moving to mashed and chopped textures, ensuring the pace matches your child’s development at home.

What is included in the daily meal service?2025-12-10T09:53:40+00:00

Our daily fee includes a full meal service: a healthy breakfast, a morning snack, a nutritious lunch, an afternoon snack (fruit selection), and a substantial afternoon tea. All drinks (milk and water) are also included.

Are your meals cooked fresh on-site?2025-12-10T09:52:45+00:00

Yes, absolutely. All of our children’s meals—including breakfast, lunch, and tea —are prepared and cooked fresh daily on-site by our dedicated nursery chef. This allows us to control the quality of ingredients and ensure every meal is served at its freshest.

Do you use sugar or salt in your cooking?2025-12-10T09:52:08+00:00

We are committed to providing low-salt and low-sugar meals. We do not add salt to any of our food and use natural flavourings from herbs, spices, and fresh vegetables instead. Any sweetness in snacks or desserts comes primarily from fresh fruit and natural ingredients, minimising added sugars.

How often does the menu change, and can I see a sample menu?2025-12-10T09:50:48+00:00

Our menus operate on a minimum of a four-week rotating cycle to ensure children enjoy maximum variety and are regularly exposed to new tastes, textures, and ingredients.

Is the nursery menu nutritionally balanced and approved by a professional?2025-12-10T09:50:01+00:00

Our menus are carefully planned to ensure every meal provides a healthy, balanced diet that meets or exceeds the nutritional guidelines for young children set by the government. We prioritize whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to support growth, development, and energy levels throughout the day.

Do you cater for specific diets, such as vegetarian, vegan, or religious requirements?2025-12-10T09:48:42+00:00

Yes, we cater for all medically-required, cultural, and religious dietary needs. Our weekly menu always includes a nutritionally complete vegetarian option, and we are happy to discuss and accommodate any other specific requirements (e.g. vegan, no pork, Halal-certified meat) with you.

How does the nursery manage food allergies and intolerances?2025-12-10T09:47:43+00:00

The health and safety of your child is our top priority. We maintain a robust allergy policy and log all known allergies and intolerances (including lactose, gluten, eggs, etc.) at registration. All meals are prepared on-site, allowing us to control ingredients and prepare appropriate alternative meals. Our staff are fully trained in allergy awareness and cross-contamination prevention.
