Seasons of Wonder: November
As autumn gives way to winter and the world around us begins to change, November is a wonderful opportunity to explore one of the most important parts of growing up: learning how to care for others.
In the early years, kindness starts with the smallest of moments. Offering a toy to a friend, helping to tidy away, noticing when someone is upset or giving a familiar face a smile are all meaningful experiences that help children begin to understand the feelings and needs of others.
At Monkey Puzzle Day Nurseries, we know that these everyday interactions play an important role in children’s development. Through play, positive relationships and hands-on experiences, children begin to develop empathy, build friendships and discover that their actions can have a positive impact on the people and world around them.

Growing Kindness Through Everyday Moments
Young children learn by watching, exploring and experiencing the world for themselves. Rather than simply telling children to be kind, we can help them understand what kindness looks like by creating opportunities to practise it every day.
Throughout November, our nurseries will be exploring ways to support kindness through exciting and seasonal initiatives such as Kindness Trees. Whether it’s helping a friend, sharing resources or offering comfort, each leaf will celebrate a moment of kindness and help children see how their actions contribute to something bigger.
These shared experiences also provide opportunities for practitioners to talk with children about feelings, encourage positive interactions and introduce simple questions such as, “How do you think your friend feels?” or “What could we do to help?”
Over time, these conversations and experiences help children develop their emotional awareness, communication skills and understanding of relationships, all important foundations for their future learning and wellbeing.
Understanding Our Community – Charity Partnerships
As children begin to develop a sense of belonging, they also start to discover that they are part of a wider community. Helping them understand how we care for one another is a valuable way to nurture connection, compassion and an early sense of responsibility.
This November, we will be supporting our charity partner Truly Beloved, a charity helping disabled children feel truly supported. Through our community giving initiative, families and nurseries will have the opportunity to come together to support a meaningful cause. Our nurseries will also being going out into their local communities to see how we can give back whether that be through fundraisers or foodbanks.
Introducing charity partnerships and connections at a young age offer gentle introductions to the idea that everyone deserves care and support, and that we can all play a part in helping others.
Caring for the World Around Us
Kindness extends beyond our relationships with people. As children explore the natural world, they begin to notice changes in the seasons, discover different plants and animals, and develop curiosity about how living things grow and survive.
November offers plenty of opportunities to connect care for our environment with meaningful early years learning. Through our Small Hands, Big Difference challenges, children will explore simple, practical ways to look after the world around them.
Activities will include:
- Creating something new: Using recycled materials to build, design and create, encouraging imagination, problem-solving and an understanding of reusing resources.
- Helping wildlife: Making bird feeders and observing the birds that visit, encouraging curiosity about animals and how their needs change during colder weather.
- Exploring recycling: Sorting everyday materials, developing early mathematical language, observation and an awareness of how we can reduce waste.
- Sharing with others: Organising a toy, book or clothing swap to explore sharing, reuse and the value of giving items a new home.
- Discovering nature: Collecting appropriate natural materials, where permitted, while learning to respect habitats and leave living things undisturbed.
Activities like the above help to bring learning to life. They encourage children to ask questions, make choices, develop new skills and begin to understand how their actions can help care for their environment.
Little Moments, Lifelong Foundations
In the early years, children are only just beginning to make sense of emotions, relationships and the world around them. They will not always find sharing easy, recognise how someone else feels or understand why looking after the environment matters. These are skills that develop gradually through supportive relationships, repeated experiences and opportunities to learn through play.
By celebrating kindness, encouraging children to help one another and giving them practical ways to care for their community and environment, we can help lay the foundations for empathy, confidence, cooperation and a sense of belonging.
And these lessons do not need to stop at nursery.
Bringing Kindness Home
Families can play an important role in helping children explore kindness in everyday life. Small, age-appropriate opportunities at home can reinforce what children are discovering at nursery, while creating special moments to learn and grow together.
You could invite your child to help choose items to donate, water a plant, reuse a cardboard box for a creative project, help prepare food for the family or notice something kind that someone has done. Even simple conversations about feelings, helping others and caring for nature can make a difference.
We would love to hear how your family is embracing kindness this November. Share your moments of discovery, community spirit and environmental care with us using #SeasonsOfWonder.
Because at Monkey Puzzle, we believe that some of the most valuable lessons begin with the smallest moments. And when children are given the opportunity to care, connect and make a difference, those moments can become the foundations for a lifetime of learning and kindness.
